Is Peace Possible?

Series: What's Missing

Summary

Jesus defeated death that we might live in increasing peace now (John 20:19-21). But often our idea of peace is wrong. In an anxious, uncertain, chaotic, depressed, and angry world, we tend to think that peace is that rare moment when things are circumstantially perfect without any conflict (which means we never have peace). But what if peace is not the absence of something but the presence of someone? Real peace comes when we radically focus on Jesus (Isaiah 26:3). Our lives are full of constant stimuli - social media, TV, videos, texting, emails, calendars - that are vying for our attention and focus. We need habits of faith that turn our mind's eye towards Jesus and heaven. Those habits include worshipping together, engaging in God's Word together, praying and listening for His voice, and participating in true Biblical community and fellowship.

Is Peace Possible?

Text John 20:19-21 (p.906)

Jesus defeated death that we might live in    now.

These first words of Jesus after the resurrection are significant. They shout the  of His heart not just for those early followers, but for us.

Jesus defeated death that peace might be our constant  (Jn. 14:27; 16:33)

We tend to think peace is that rare moment when things are  perfect.

What if peace is not the  of something but the  of someone?

If Jesus' kingdom is not of this world, then those who live in his kingdom will live in a way that is  different than the norm of our world. (Jn. 18:36)

Living in God's peace and not just talking about God's peace hinges on one thing.   (Is. 26:3)

Modern life, if it does anything, it  us from what is best with that which is either trivial or inflammatory.

More than ever, we need    that turn our minds eye toward heaven.

When we accept his radical love and grace, and we do the radical by living a life keeping our    on Him, we can live increasingly in peace no matter what happens. (Rm. 5:1)

A the peace of God, which  all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:7
