Cage of Assumptions

Series: Wild Goose Chase

David McQueenSeptember 28, 2025Weekend Services

Passage: Exodus 2:1

Assumptions are powerful. They shape how we see ourselves, God, and the world around us. But often our assumptions are cages that keep us from the Spirit-led life God intends. Moses assumed he was disqualified because of his past failure, his lack of eloquence, and his limitations (Exodus 3–4). Yet God still called him to lead Israel out of Egypt, reminding him, “I will be with you.” Mark Batterson writes: “Not only does God disrupt our routines, like we explored in the last chapter; He also challenges our assumptions. Assumptions that take all the mystery and majesty out of life.” When we live by assumptions, we shrink our vision down to what feels possible. But when we live by faith, we see that “with God all things are possible.” The Spirit calls us to trust His promises, not our perceived limitations. To chase the Wild Goose, we must be willing to challenge the ceilings we’ve placed on God and step into His adventure.

Cage of Assumptions

Text: Exodus 2-4

We as humans are designed for  and not just

The human heart longs to be part of something , things where God shows up and does something far beyond what we could ever do ourselves. (Ecc. 3:11)

When we're not following the wild goose into crucial adventures, we find ourselves

That is when we too often find ourselves doing things that seem absurd,  and foolish.

is a simple word that says, "God, I'm ready to join you in what you're doing in the world. I'm ready to live - not exist - live as you designed me to live."

Moses wasn't making . Moses was dealing with .

And Moses learned what we must learn if we're going to live lives of eternal

God at times works  our reality.

At times God invites us into situations where He will have to , or it will utterly fail. (Jn. 6:7-9)

If we want to be part of things that fulfill the ache for purpose that is eternal - to live crucial adventures - then we can't be caged by the  that we are limited to our reality.

"Faith is not logical. But it isn't illogical either. Faith is . It does not ignore reality; it just adds God into the equation." Mark Batterson in Wild Goose Chase
