Shame Off You

Series: Triggered

David McQueenMay 17, 2026Weekend Services

Passage: Luke 8:40-48

Shame is different from guilt. Guilt says, "I did something wrong." Shame says, "Something is wrong with me." Shame can come from our own choices, but it can also come from painful things done to us or spoken over us. In Luke 8, a woman who had been sick and isolated for twelve years reached out to touch Jesus. Instead of rejecting her, Jesus healed her, called her "Daughter," and sent her away in peace. Jesus came to free us from shame and remind us that we are not defined by our past, our pain, or what others have said. We are defined by what Jesus says.

Shame Off You

Main Text: Luke 8:40-48

focuses on what I did.  focuses on who I am.

“Shame is a deep sense that you are inherently flawed, unacceptable, and  of love because of something you’ve done, something done to you, or something associated with you.”  - Ed Welch.

Shame manifests itself in our lives:

·

·      perfectionism.

·      criticism.

·      destructive behavior.

·       feelings.

Shame heals as I change my focus from what I am not to .

Jesus says you’re not worthless.  He knows you are worth the price of  on the cross.

When we become a follower of Jesus, we are forgiven and made into a new person who  to become more like Jesus. (1 Corinthians 1:18)

You are not what others have said about you. You are not what others have done to you. You are who  says you are.
