Strange Gifts 

Text: Matthew 2:1-12 (p. 807) 

Myrrh in the ancient Jewish world was used some as a .  

But a far more common use of myrrh was to anoint dead bodies for burial. (Jn. 19:38-39)

Christmas is about death. 

That which we can say so easily and casually without awe was so incredibly amazing that not one single person who walked and lived with Jesus for three years could grasp it. (Mk. 3:21; Mt. 16:18-23)

It was too grand - too great - too  to think even God would do such a thing. 

Christmas is about  that leads to

When God created the Garden of Eden with the tree of knowledge, He also created at the same time the tree of  in heaven. 

And to make sure we could move from the tree of knowledge to the tree of life, He planned the tree of  on a nub of hill outside of Jerusalem. (1Pet. 1:18-20; Gal. 4:4-5)

Maybe the single most important thing we can do as a follower of Jesus is to  and nurture an ongoing awe of the greatest truth ever. 

We cannot let  dull our awe of amazement. There are depths of this reality to be uncovered, heights to be climbed. 

The way we become a follower of Jesus - the way we become one who receives the abundant life of Jesus in this life and in the life to come - is to . (Jn. 12:24) 

If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross  and follow me. Luke 9:23

 I die to the old self I used to be, and i put on the new self, created to be like Jesus. (Lk. 9:23)
