Hearing Through Open Doors & Opportunities

Knock, There Is A Door

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened. Matthew 7:7-8

In this scripture we see three major keys to opening a door, not just any old door but a magnificent door. A door that when we ask, seek and knock it will open!

We love to quote this scripture for any and every whim or desire we have and often put a demand on God to open up “our” doors just because we asked. The reality is, I am thankful to a good Father that knows what is best for my life and will often decide to not open a door that isn’t beneficial to my life.

Let’s look at the proper way to approach our Father in order for the door to open. The very first word is “ASK.”  To ask for something requires humbling ourselves. We live in a culture that really doesn’t like to admit that we have need of anything. We tend to come with a posture of demand, merit or entitlement. God’s word tells us to lower ourselves to a place of that of a humble child acknowledging that we have needs that we can’t fulfill within our own self-sufficiency. So God’s gift to us is prayer. The “ask” is us posturing ourselves in dependency on the grace, mercy and love of a good Father.

To seek in this context means to “find what is missing.” The Hebrew word for seek is baqash. It has a very strong meaning, to find, require, desire and request.

In other words, keep seeking until you find. The idea is that of a parent searching for a lost child.  Imagine how your heart would respond as you seek to find that which is lost. Your entire heart would be engaged. God’s desire is that we would approach Him with this manner of seeking.  “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart” Jeremiah 29:13.

When I think of “knocking” on a door I picture someone using the knuckles of their hand to hit a door to demand or get the attention of someone on the other side of the door, while also taking the posture of “waiting” for them to respond by answering or opening the door.

This scripture encourages my heart that when I approach any “closed” door in my life with the correct heart posture I can count on a faithful, good Father to open it.

Through the gift of prayer, I’m going to “ask” with the heart and posture of a child. I am going to ask repeatedly believing with child-like faith that God wants to give me good things. We can boldly approach and ask…”which of you, if his son asks him for bread , will give hi a stone?  Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent?  If you then. Who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!” (Matthew 7: 9-11)

There is a door that is always worth seeking to open.  Jesus said of Himself, I AM the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. (John 10:9 )

The door of Jesus and His Kingdom are doors worth spending our entire lives seeking.

You have said, “Seek my face.” My heart says to you, “Your face, Lord, do I seek.” Psalm 27:8

When we seek Him and His Kingdom first, and with all we have we can be confident that He will open any other door in our lives that needs to be opened.

“As for me, I would seek God, and to God would I commit my cause, who does great things and unsearchable, marvelous things without number… Job 5:8-9

Let us be found “knocking” not just to have “knocked" but present tense “knocking” on the door of Jesus, believing He will open up heaven and pour out treasures beyond our wildest imaginations and desires.

Today’s Prayer:  Father God, thank you for sending Jesus to be the doorway into relationship with you.  Thank you for the gift of prayer; teach me like you did the disciples to increase in dependence on you through prayer. In Jesus’ Name, Amen!

Today’s Challenge:  Lay aside any desire except the desire to “know” Jesus in a more intimate and personal way.  Just sit with Him and ask Him to speak to your heart about Himself.  Ask Him what is on His heart concerning the dreams He has for your life.
