Hearing Through Open Doors & Opportunities

by Sherrie Saltzgaber on June 02, 2020

Delighted In And Committed To

“Delight yourself in the Lord; And He will give you the desires of your heart.  Commit your way to the Lord, Trust also in Him and He will do it.  Psalm 37:4-5

Most of the time an open door presents itself as something that we are wanting very badly.  There isn’t anything wrong with wanting something strongly except when the desire for the opportunity or door to be opened exceeds our desire for God, Himself.

I believe there are some keys in these verses that will help us stay on a course that doesn’t allow us to be carried away with our fleshy desires that can derail the purposes and plans God intends for our lives.

We live in a culture that says we can have what we want when we want it, whether or not it would actually be beneficial or good for us doesn’t really factor into the equation until we realize what we thought we desired wasn’t what God intended at all. Do we really believe God is a good Father that desires good toward and for us?

This verse tells us how we can protect ourselves from straying from having a pure motive in what we are seeking. Are we finding our greatest delight in the Lord or from the things that are “temporal” or “easy”  or “self- gratifying”?

Have we committed our “way” unto the Lord?  Our way, refers to the things we are chasing after, the desires, hopes, dreams, opinion’s about the course of our lives.  Do we even care what God thinks about the things we think, choose or decide to run after in life?  Are we taking time to ask His opinion, His heart for a matter or what would please Him concerning our steps?

Have we been preoccupied by and influenced by a world culture that tries to convince us that we deserve “such and such”, we are owed “this or that” or that on our own merit we have earned “status” “renown” and ‘entitlement to the right to our own desires.

This line of thinking and belief leads us to the place of the “dog eat dog” world in which there is nothing wrong with me chasing down and knocking open any door I desire.  After all, “if I want it, I should take it” no one is going to give it to me.

This would be a great place to remind ourselves that we are not our own, we have been bought by the precious blood of Jesus and it is no longer I that lives but Christ lives in me (Galatians 2:20).

Therefore, as I commit my desires to God and I place my trust in Him in the confidence that He is who He says He is I can walk in the delight that He will give me what is good.  I no longer have to fight, push or knock down doors of opportunity if I am trusting God to open what no man can open and shut what no man can shut (Revelation 3:7).

It’s a whole lot easier to open a locked door when you have the key and according to this verse, delighting myself in the Lord and committing my way unto the Lord are powerful keys that unlock His desire to meet the deepest places of desire in our hearts.

Today’s Prayer:  Lord, grant me a heart that desires what you desire.  I want my greatest desire and fulfillment to come from You, Yourself!  I desire to love you and to pursue you above anything else in my life.  Teach me to trust that you will open doors for me as I place you first in my life.

Today’s Challenge:  Ask Holy Spirit to show you if the  “wants” or “desires” that you are pursuing right now are pleasing to God.  Ask Holy Spirit to increase your ability to delight in the Lord.   Practice sitting still and asking God, “what brings Him pleasure about your life”?
