God Speaks in Various Ways

Come Sit with Me

A typical occurrence in my life right now. My son (18 months old) walking around looking for something. I watch him for a moment – amazed at the miracle of life that our children are. Then he finds it. His snack and cup of water. He sits down to enjoy them – grinning at me.

Then something else. He’s not content to sit there and enjoy his snack alone. He locks eyes with me and pats the ground next to him. “Come sit with me.” He’s not using words and sentences yet – but his intent is clear. He wants me to sit down with him and just enjoy each other’s presence. He’s not the only one, either. My daughters often climb up in my lap to talk or read books together – and sometimes just to sit quietly.

It’s in moments like that I’m reminded that I’m not only a Father (we have 4 kiddos), but I’m a son. And my Heavenly Father has the same desire for me. To be together. Sometimes to talk, sometimes to listen. Sometimes to “just be.”

He loves when we spend time together. Not distracted by the things going on all around me. He invites me to come and sit with him. Whether it’s a place of worship and I can declare my love and awe of him or a place of quiet where I can listen for his voice, his desire is still the same. “Come sit with me.”

Scripture says that as our GOOD SHEPHERD, God is calling to each one of us – and we can recognize his voice. John 10:3 says that the “Sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.” This describes an incredibly personal relationship with us. He calls us by name. And He calls us His own. He knows our hearts. He knows our thoughts. He knows our circumstances. He knows our concerns.

During this season – and especially during this Sermon Series – I am challenged and encouraged to look for the times when I can get away with my Heavenly Father. I want to hear His voice – through reading my Bible, or allowing His still small voice to speak truth into my world. I want to hear “When HE speaks” to me.

Do you hear Him today? I encourage each of us to slow down and listen. He is speaking. He is calling you by name – inviting you to “Come sit with me.” Go for it. He’ll meet you there.

Prayer for today:

Father, thank you for pursuing me in love. I’m humbled that you desire to spend time with me – and in return, I want to spend time with you as well. Grant me the grace to recognize your voice today – and to hear what you’re speaking to me in this season. Speak to me through your word. Speak to me by your Spirit in me. I want to hear from you. Amen.
